    The Project

A Pasiego cabin with over a century of history

A restoration project to keep the essence of Cantabrian rural heritage alive

Nestled in the rolling landscape of the Pasiegos Valleys, this old cabin built in 1900 has withstood the test of time. Today, a new chapter begins: its restoration — a process conceived out of respect for its Pasiego identity and with the hope of sharing its story with new generations.

Every stone and every beam will be recovered to preserve the authenticity of this rural mountain corner, keeping alive a legacy that transcends generations.

    Architectural heritage

    What is a Pasiego cabin?

Pasiego cabins are traditional buildings from Cantabria, iconic symbols of the Pasiegos Valleys. They are simple two-storey structures: the lower floor served as a stable for cattle, while the upper floor was used as a hayloft (known locally as payo) or hay store.

They are built from local limestone and topped with a gabled roof of tile or flagstone, supported by oak or chestnut beams. Access to the upper floor is typically via a patín, an external stone staircase leading to a small covered landing beneath the eaves.

Despite their humble, functional origins — sheltering shepherds and livestock during the seasonal muda or transhumance — the thousands of traditional cabins scattered across the valleys have acquired immense cultural and emotional significance in Cantabria.

    Looking ahead

The new life of La Cabaña Norte

Imagine waking in this fully renewed cabin, surrounded by the rugged character of its century-old stone walls but with the warmth of a modern home.

On the ground floor, an open-plan space where living room, kitchen and dining area coexist beneath the original timber-beam ceiling; a corner presided over by a traditional fireplace invites you to read by the fire on a rainy afternoon.

Strategically placed large windows will flood the interior with light and frame the valley views. On the upper floor, three cosy bedrooms with sloping ceilings and exposed beams, alongside two full bathrooms.

Step outside to a newly built porch or solana where you can sit and breathe in the fresh air: a semi-open terrace designed in the traditional Pasiego style.

    Philosophy

Our commitment to the Pasiego territory

    Local materials

Local stone, oak and chestnut wood treated with natural oils, and artisanal techniques following regional architecture guidelines.

    Heritage conservation

We preserve the original stone walls and the distinctive gabled roof, reusing materials wherever possible.

    Sustainability

Energy efficiency and insulation improvements integrated subtly, without compromising the original rustic appearance.

"Restoring this cabin isn't merely an architectural project — it's a declaration of care for Pasiego heritage. Rather than building something new, we recover what already exists, minimising environmental impact and preserving cultural patrimony."

    Evolution

    From barn to retreat
